What do I need to know about Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR)?

Developed by Francine Shapiro and initially used for the treatment of war trauma, research has now shown EMDR to be effective for such disparate concerns as chronic pain, birth trauma, childhood abuse recovery, extended grief and adjustment challenges. EMDR is a non-invasive, brief therapy technique which is individualized to your preference for pace and purpose.

One of the most commonly-studied and utilized systems of therapy, CBT offers individuals an organized method for tracking thoughts and behaviors, and the connection of these to your emotional experience.

What is hypnosis?

Hypnosis describes the guided visualizations offered by a trained practitioner which invite a state of deep relaxation. Since, as the saying goes, “all hypnosis is self hypnosis,” no one can be forced to do anything against their will nor to change their thoughts to be outside of their personal value system. Hypnosis techniques enable the replacement of unhealthy and unhelpful patterns of thought or behavior with those more congruent with your preferred way to be in the world. With hypnosis, you can truly begin to actualize your potential.

What does the research say about hypnosis?

Recent research has once again underscored the efficacy of hypnosis for use with pain management, mood management and personal health and wellbeing. Hypnosis used during childbirth reduces the need for anesthesia, raises the rate of normal vaginal birth, and protects the mother and infant from the side effects of other pain management techniques such as oral, intravenous and epidural or spinal medications. I am constantly updating and expanding upon my hypnosis techniques for use with wide variety of physical and emotional health care needs such as reducing fears and sensations around birth, encouraging the onset of labor, facilitating weight loss, decreasing test anxiety, increasing the efficacy of smoking cessation plans, and the treatment of insomnia.

What is Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR)?

Formalized as a treatment by Jon Kabat-Zinn, MBSR is based upon ancient practices which studies confirm enable the practitioner to be calmer, in less pain, and to heal more quickly than peers in control groups without similar care. MBSR, when embraced as a life-style, can invite peace and compassion for yourself and others into your everyday experience.

What can I expect when using biofeedback?

This simple technique, using only a finger-pad sensor, can illuminate patterns of stress responses, and can provide a real-time tangible system of measuring progress in the application of stress management skills. Your progress becomes visible.

Why would I want to participate in a support group?

Many clinicians and women themselves would agree that women are “relationship oriented.” Women often find solace, support and healing in the company of other women. Group therapy is facilitated, confidential and growth-oriented. The groups offered in my practice range from a postpartum adjustment group, a birth stories group, to a women’s DBT skills group. Other groups are created as the opportunity and community come together.

How do I decide between medical care and mental health support?

Certain disorders are often treated by both a physician and a mental health professional. For example, research indicates that the treatment of mood disorders via medication is even more effective when coupled with the care of a qualified therapist. A medical care provider can also test and stabilize imbalances of thyroid, blood sugar, and anemia which can worsen mood and concentration challenges.
